Snoop Dogg has recently found himself in another controversy after he spoke out about LGBTQ+ inclusion in children’s films. The rapper criticized the animated movie Lightyear after taking his grandson to watch the film and struggling to explain a same-sex couple featured in the plot.

The new movie from Pixar is a spinoff from the popular Toy Story series. In the film, a character is revealed to be in a same-sex relationship, which includes a kiss between two women. The company initially removed the scene following conservative backlash, but was later reinstated after a row internally and from LGBTQ+ groups calling for representation.

The rapper described having to explain the moment in the film to his grandson, with the boy interrupting the movie to ask: “How does she have a baby with a woman? Is she a woman?” The rapper asked on the podcast. “Oh s—, I didn’t come in for this s—. I just came to watch the g—— movie.”

Snoop added that he had no answer for his grandson’s question at the time, so he told him to watch the rest of the movie. “They just said she had a baby. They are both women. How does she have a baby? S—. The movie ain’t over with,” he went on to say. “I’m scared to go to the movies. Like y’all throwing me in the middle of s— that I don’t have an answer for.”

The hip-hop artist then said that the fact that the boy even asked that question was his main problem with the film, which he thought was a “baby movie.” Snoop said: “It threw me for a loop… I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

The rapper is due to perform at the Australian Football League’s Grand Final later this year. However, Snoop Dogg’s recent comments on the LGBTQ+ moment in Lightyear have been met with anger online, with some calling for the rapper to be axed from the event. According to PinkNews, AFL chief executive Gillon McLachlan has said the organization would not be reconsidering the rapper’s appearance.

The AFL has long courted the image of being inclusive and diverse in recent years. The organization did not give any indication that Snoop’s appearance would be canceled despite backlash online.

This is not the first time the movie has been at the center of controversy. Lightyear was criticized upon release by conservatives who felt that the brief same-sex kiss between two women in the film was not suitable for a children’s movie.

Disney had temporarily pulled the moment following the blowback. The company later reinstated the scene following pushback from Pixar employees and LGBTQ+ advocacy groups. Chris Evans, who plays the voice of Buzz Lightyear, had defended the moment in the film on Reuters Television, saying: “The real truth is those people are idiots.”

“The goal is to pay them no mind, march forward, and embrace the growth that makes us human.” Lightyear was an attempt to branch the Toy Story universe out by telling the story of the “real” Buzz Lightyear.

Buzz Lightyear of Star Command is a space-age science-fiction hero from the future. The children’s toy character who appears in Toy Story was inspired by Buzz Lightyear from the Star Command series. Lightyear received mixed reviews and performed poorly at the box office, only grossing over $226 million globally when analysts had expected a much better return.

Snoop Dogg’s comments on the LGBTQ+ scene in the film have caused further debate. The rapper said in the podcast: “It threw me for a loop… These are kids that we have to show that at this age, like, they’re going to ask questions. They are going to ask. I don’t have an answer. And I was just there to go to sleep and watch the movie. That s— woke me up.”

Supporters of representation and modern family structures in films and television shows argue that it is needed to help children and young people accept LGBTQ+ people as the norm. However, critics feel that films that feature LGBTQ+ storylines often leave adults struggling to answer questions from their children, which should not be asked in a children’s film.

As yet, there is no indication that Snoop Dogg will retract the comments or apologize for them. His appearance at the AFL Grand Final in November is still on the calendar. It remains to be seen whether the podcast remarks will affect his international reputation, but they have once again placed him at the center of cultural conflict over how to show modern family life to children.
