A Little Help Mobilizes Volunteers for Winter Readiness
On Saturday, the nonprofit A Little Help organized its flagship event, Service Saturday, rallying community volunteers to assist older adults with essential home preparation for the winter season. The effort, held across the Denver metro area, aimed to help seniors thrive by offering support with yardwork and building meaningful connections between neighbors.
Over 250 Volunteers Spread Out Across the Metro Area
According to Walker Shumock-Bailey, the organization’s Public Relations Coordinator, the event saw more than 250 volunteers dispatched to various homes. "We sent out over 250 volunteers today to different homes across the metro area to help older adults with leaf raking, yard work and anything else to prepare their homes for winter," Shumock-Bailey said. The organization’s mission focuses on connecting neighbors to help older adults thrive, but the experience offers much more, he added.
University Students Join the Effort
Among the volunteers was Hamzah Clark, a student from the University of Denver. Clark and his group spent time in Denver’s Wash Park neighborhood, where they cleaned gutters and raked leaves for a local resident. "It makes me feel like a more active member of my community, and like I’m having a real impact," Clark said about his experience volunteering with A Little Help.
Beyond Yardwork: Building Neighbor Connections
While the main focus of Service Saturday was home and yard maintenance for seniors, the overarching aim of the project is to strengthen community bonds. "We can rake [her] leaves, but what is more important is that [she] knows people are here to help her if she needs it," Clark emphasized, highlighting the importance of neighbor connections and ongoing support for older adults.
