Ironheart Trailer Introduces Anthony Ramos as The Hood
Ryan Coogler is having a good year. Right after his new movie Sinners was a major success at the box office, the Oscar-nominated director had already started working on another new project. This time it’s Marvel’s latest limited series, Ironheart, with the studio having just released a sleek new trailer in advance of the show’s upcoming June 2025 premiere.
Ironheart, which is set to consist of six episodes in total, will see Dominique Thorne play the role of Marvel Comics character Riri Williams, a teenage technology whiz known as Ironheart and a protégé of Tony Stark in the source material. The series will be the last TV show in the Marvel Cinematic Universe’s Phase Five.
Ironheart was first announced back in December 2020 and was originally set to debut in 2023. At that time, Marvel was still looking to release five separate movies per year, along with an increasing number of Disney+ series. However, that strategy changed later on as Marvel felt some of its shows were becoming overproduced in a way that led to over-saturation of the market, leading to a delay in the series’ premiere until this summer. Clips first shown at the 2024 D23 convention showed a “crime show with an Iron Man twist at the center, this time dipping deeper into the grittier, MCU street-level feel than previous Marvel series.”
The character of Riri Williams first appeared in 2022’s Black Panther: Wakanda Forever. After creating a vibranium detector during a trip to MIT, she finds herself caught in the crossfire of Namor and his race of blue-skinned people. Riri forges a friendship with Shuri during the movie, as the two are both “sci-fi geeks.” Riri eventually goes on to build a suit similar to that of Iron Man’s to help Wakanda defend against Namor’s forces. When it is all over, she is forced to leave the suit with the Wakandans before returning to MIT.
Mixing Tech and Sorcery
Ironheart picks up not long after the conclusion of Wakanda Forever. According to an official synopsis, “Set after the events of Black Panther: Wakanda Forever, Ironheart pits technology against magic when Riri—determined to make her mark on the world—returns to her hometown of Chicago. Her unique take on building iron suits is brilliant, but in pursuit of her ambitions, she finds herself wrapped up with the mysterious yet charming Parker Robbins, aka ‘The Hood’ (Anthony Ramos).”
Joining Thorne in the main cast are Lyric Ross as Riri’s best friend Natalie Washington; Alden Ehrenreich as Joe McGillicuddy; Manny Montana as Cousin John; Matthew Elam as Xavier Washington; and Anji White as Riri’s mother, Ronnie. Shea Couleé will appear as Slug. Jim Rash will reprise his role as the dean of MIT, which he first had in 2016’s Captain America: Civil War, and Sacha Baron Cohen will also star in an undisclosed role.
The new trailer gets right into the action immediately. Riri is shown at the start walking into a pizza restaurant that has been closed off by the authorities. The moment she steps inside, an elevator comes crashing down around her with a deadly mix of gas only two minutes on the clock before she suffocates. Riri is not alone in the elevator, as she has a speakerphone up to a man known as The Hood, who tells her she will suffocate if she does not hack a device on the floor to access a gas mask hidden within. Riri refuses to cooperate, however, and instead uses her skills to come up with her unique solution to the problem.
Impressed, The Hood offers her the opportunity to join him on something, though he’s not above the law. The Hood is clearly up to no good, but Riri sees this as the perfect opportunity to prove herself before finally agreeing to his proposal. The question now is just how far Riri is willing to go with The Hood and what it will take to achieve his goals. She might have earned his trust, but her friends don’t all share this opinion, most notably Natalie, who immediately tells Riri she doesn’t know anything about The Hood and that his schemes could get her into some serious trouble. The Hood himself reinforces this, telling Riri, “Anyone who has ever accomplished anything iconic in life has had to do some questionable things to get it done.”
Marvel has officially confirmed that the first three episodes of Ironheart will premiere on Disney+ on June 24, 2025, with three more episodes then releasing every week. As for a second season, it has not been announced at this time, though it has not been ruled out if the first season is well-received. Marvel has also just released a behind-the-scenes featurette in advance of the upcoming premiere, giving viewers a look at the crew and what to expect from the action, thrills, and drama.
Ryan Coogler’s Ironheart series might just bridge the gap between Iron Man’s futuristic armored suits and a darker crime-centered approach.
