Nine teenagers have been arrested in connection with the June 24 shooting death of Trey Dean Wright, a 16-year-old from Johnsonville, South Carolina. According to police, the incident “was the result of a disagreement over a girl” that eventually ended in gunfire.

The killing, which was partially recorded on video by one of the suspects, has rocked the nearby town of Florence and left Wright’s family searching for answers. Florence County deputies say they found the victim’s body on First Neck Road on June 24 and that he had been shot several times. The rural road, which is located about 45 miles west of Myrtle Beach, is where Wright was killed.

On June 25, police arrested a 19-year-old man named Devan Scott Raper of Conway after he was identified as the shooter. Raper, who the Florence County Sheriff’s Office says fired at Wright “during an escalating verbal argument,” was charged with murder. Three days later, the sheriff’s office issued an arrest warrant for Wright’s girlfriend, 17-year-old Gianna Kistenmacher of Myrtle Beach. She was later charged with being an accessory before the fact of murder, for allegedly helping to lure Wright to his death.

“The armed codefendant Raper shot and killed Trey. Raper was not acting alone, and as the investigation continued, additional arrests were made in the days and weeks following the shooting,” the Florence County Sheriff’s Office said in a press release. “We have charged several teens with accessory before the fact of murder as well as other offenses, as they helped to lure the victim to the scene knowing that Raper was present and that he was armed with a deadly weapon and had threatened the victim.”

Police Say Shooting Was Captured on Video

In addition to Raper and Kistenmacher, the Florence County Sheriff’s Office has arrested eight more people in connection with the shooting. Wright’s mother, Ashley Lindsey, told Fox News Digital that she has been struggling since her son’s death. “All this court hearing and bond court and stuff is driving me crazy,” she said. “I don’t even have time to sit down and think half the time, on top of losing my precious baby.”

In a press conference last week, Major Michael Nunn of the Florence County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that five more of the suspects were arrested as adults after they too helped set up the shooting. South Carolina state law allows prosecutors to charge anyone 16 or older as an adult, and Nunn said that one of the state’s conspiracy laws was what guided the accessory charges for the rest.

“Hand of one, hand of all is part of South Carolina law as well, so that’s the basis of the charge for each of those individuals,” Nunn told reporters, according to WBTW-TV. “They were complicit in bringing the armed codefendant Raper to the incident location and knowing that there would be a confrontation. They knew that Raper had presented a firearm to the victim and made threats to shoot him, according to the arrest warrants.”

Kistenmacher is not the only young woman accused of playing a role in Wright’s death. Police arrested the victim’s stepmom, Trinette Lindsey, in late June. She has not been charged with any crime in connection with the shooting, and her lawyer has said that her arrest was not “substantive” and was “without merit.”

Homicide Charges Appear to Have Been Added Later

Three additional people were arrested by the Florence County Sheriff’s Office, all of them young women from the Myrtle Beach area. The victims’ stepmom was one, but the other two have since been charged with murder as well, in addition to Raper. They have been identified as 18-year-olds Hunter Kendall and Corrine Belviso, as well as 17-year-old Sydney Kearns.

“A confrontation was set up, and multiple individuals and codefendants were complicit in bringing Raper and his firearm to the scene,” Nunn said last week, according to WBTW-TV. “They made efforts to try to conceal it and lied to investigators.”

Kendall is in custody without bond on the murder charge, while Belviso and Kearns both have a $20,000 surety bond posted, meaning they were released on bail. It is not known how large the bond was for Kendall and the other defendants in custody. The Florence County Sheriff’s Office has not released further details on the shooting, as the investigation remains ongoing, and the district attorney declined to comment on the matter.

According to Wright’s mother, however, nothing can bring her son back. “There ain’t nothing no one can do to bring him back,” she told WBTW-TV. “They took him away from me.”

The victim’s stepmom, Lindsey, was also arrested on June 30, though she has not been charged with any crimes related to the shooting.

County Sheriff T.J. Joye told local media that the killing was the result of a fight over a girl.

“The female in the picture, or the female being talked about by these individuals, was a major part of their relationships and where this conflict is coming from,” Joye told WBTW-TV. “It went from, like, one individual had a beef, and it spread to a group of individuals. They all got involved, and we lost a young life, so it’s very frustrating. We still have a long investigation.”

“You just got a 16-year-old that lost his life, and you got a 19-year-old who is going to be in jail the rest of his life,” Joye added. “Over what?”
